in-use tests and proven to deliver superior ergonomic
support. AirPacks System backpacks are the only backpacks
to offer a COMFORT GUARANTEE.
Using air in the shoulder straps and lumbar support,
the AirPacks technology transfers the weight from
the neck and shoulders to the right place to carry
weight, the lower back; thereby reducing stress to
the user’s body by 80% and the effective load
by at least 30%. The system reduces compressional
loading of the acromio-clavicular joints and stress
on the trapezius muscles. The biomechanical design
reduces the risk of impingement problems.
The system delivers this ergonomic support without
the use of a waist belt. Waist belts may cause forced
excessive distribution across a growing pelvis leading
to possible pelvic abnormalities.
Overall, the unique air lumbar support promotes neutral
posture. No other ergonomic system has been clinically
proven to instill this proper mechanics and provide
this level of support and comfort.
The AirPacks System is endorsed by the Congress of

Keeping
Backs Healthy with Ergonomically Designed Packs
Beverly,
MA - November. 2000
- As the New Year begins, people are particularly
concerned about their health - keeping their bodies in
shape, eating well and exercising. But many people are
also just taking their backs for granted, even though
they may be hurting themselves by carrying too heavy
loads improperly.
Professionals
are killing their backs lugging their laptops. 80% of
Americans will suffer from back pain at some point in
their lives, and 50% of us will suffer from low-back
pain this year. Low back-pain is the most common
health problem experienced by working Americans today,
and a condition which costs our nation's economy at
least $50 billion a year in lost wages and
productivity. (source:
ACA, American Chiropractic Association)
40
million teenagers carry a backpack to school, many
overstuffed and too heavy. For children, the problems
may have drastic long-term implications. While
carrying a backpack to school every morning may seem
harmless enough, it can cause painful back and neck
problems and injuries and can lead to long-term
medical problems. If children are feeling headaches,
necks aches, bad posture, achy and strained muscles,
low back pain, muscle spasm, tingling hands and
increased scoliosis complications, they are carrying
too much weight improperly.
Medical
professionals advise that individuals carry no more
than 15% of their body weight on their backs. Example:
A person weighing:
- 80
lbs. should carry only 4 - 8lbs.
- 100
lbs. Should carry only 5 - 10 lbs.
- 130
lbs. Should carry only 6.5 - 12 lbs.
- 150
lbs. Should carry only 7.5 - 15 lbs.
Many
children are carrying up to 40 lbs. and are injuring
themselves.
In
a recent Australian research study, gender-age
environmental associates of adolescent low back pain,
the researchers concluded, "that ongoing concern
is warranted regarding adolescent spinal responses to
repeated heavy load carriage and prolonged
sitting…adult spinal pain is common and costly and
every effort should be made to minimize environmental
hazards for the adolescent spine."
Children
and adults may not carry less weight, but they can
carry the weight safer.
A
Beverly, MA based company, AIRPACKS, offers an
ergonomic support system: air-filled cushions in the
shoulder straps and lumbar area which shifts the
weight from the neck and shoulders to the right place,
the lower back area. Developed with medical
professionals, the packs reduce the stress to the user
by 80% and lightens the load by 30%. Products include:
backpacks, briefcases and computer bags, all designed
with the ergonomic support system.

AirPacks,
Inc. Reports School Nurses Seeing Increased Pain and
Injuries from Backpacks
Beverly,
MA -- February, 2000 - In a recent survey of more
than 200 New England school nurses in public and
private elementary, middle, and high schools, 66% of
the nurses reported seeing high school students with
pain or injury attributed to carrying backpacks that
are too heavy and not designed for large loads.
The
survey was conducted by AIRPACKS, INC. a
backpack company that manufactures ergonomic backpacks
for children, students, and adults.
The
nurses found that most of the pain or injuries
occurred in high school when students are carrying
heavier loads including books, athletic gear, laptop
computers, and general miscellaneous belongings. But
the nurses also reported seeing children in middle
schools (55%) and elementary schools (45%) complaining
of back and neck pains. And over 50% of the parents
have expressed concerned about backpack injuries to
their children. Most pediatricians recommend that a
child carry not more than 10-15% of its body weight,
but today many students are carrying more than 25-40
lbs. on their backs, which is potentially injurious,
especially to growing bodies and can evolve into
chronic back and neck pain later in life.
The
national medical community is also focusing on this
major medical issue. The American Academy of
Orthopedics, American Physical Therapy Association,
and the American Chiropractic Association have
recently written about the dangers of carrying too
heavy backpacks or carrying them improperly.
Ideally,
backpacks should be worn on both shoulders, have
padded shoulder straps and a waist belt to keep the
weight distributed and away from the shoulders and
back, but most student day backpacks are not designed
this way.
AirPacks,
Inc., in conjunction with the medical community,
has designed a product line of comfortable and
affordable ergonomic backpacks that use a new
technological design; air in the shoulder straps and
in an air-filled lumbar support, which shifts the
weight away from the neck and shoulders to the lower
waist area. The design reduces the stress to the user
by 80% and lightens the load by 30%. The backpack was
developed with the NeuroMuscular Research Center at
Boston University, a world-renowned biomedical
research center.
AirPacks
products are sold through sporting goods and
department stores, catalogs, Relax The Back stores and
